Oaxacan Artisan

"Hi to everyone in Novica and around the World! We're happy to introduce ourselves as a group of artisans from the Mexican state of Oaxaca. We formed an Association in order to support each other, and learn from each other's expertise. We are artists and artisans from the different communities in Oaxaca, and we strive to preserve and promote our cultures and traditions. We've known each other for a long time, but it is only recently that we got together and thought about putting this project together. We named our good friend Oscar as our representative.

"We are proud of our work, which is why we aim for the highest quality in our different products. That's why we do not produce in series. We prefer to work on a piece at a time to ensure it is a unique, hand-crafted work of art.
"Our Association includes weavers from Teotitlán del Valle, which is renowned for Zapotec hand-loomed rugs. The different symbols they use have a special meaning and represent different stories from our Zapotec ancestors. We also have silversmiths, who create myriad designs with different gemstones mined in the region. You might also know of our famous alebrijes, from San Martin Tilcajetes, which are wood sculptures offantastical creatures originating in a world of color and magic in the legends of different communities. There are also master ceramists of black pottery from San Bartolo Coyotepec who create beautiful decorative pieces. In some communities, they use these pots for rituals, like making a person fall in love with one!

"It gives us immense joy and satisfaction to be able to show our work to the world, for it represents the magic and mysticism of the different ethnic communities in the state of Oaxaca. We want to make sure our art and our traditions are passed-on from one generation to another, and working together ensures it is a labor of love, and that we give it our best effort. It also helps us financially, since we buy the prime materials as an association thanks to the support of companies like Novica.
"We are keen to share our customs and our work with you, because of the great love you have towards our culture. We greatly appreciate your interest in our art, and we'd like to reassure you that with every piece that you acquire through Novica, you motivate us to continue in our efforts. Your interest in our Oaxacan crafts speaks to our hands and inspires us to continue by creating new and exciting designs
