Mario Lazo

Hi. My name is Mario Lazo, and I belong to a family of three generations of weavers. I discovered art when I was still a child. I can remember how my grandparents would take me to the hill where the sheep were. These were sheared to get wool for our rugs. What happens is that the wool is boiled with a plant which produces a lot of suds to get rid of grease; among its advantages are that it doesn’t lose its shine and absorbs natural colors best. After boiling, it is left to dry in the sun while at the same time it is beaten with a wooden stick found in the region to separate the different fibers.

Natural coloring such as the cochineal grain, some plants and stones have been used for generations to dye our wool.
Afterward our foot looms used for centuries by our ancestors is used to weave our rugs each one of carries a part of our history and beliefs.

We struggle daily so that this tradition does not die out and we instill in our children a sense of this beautiful art so that they also in due time will hand it down to their children.
It takes a long time to be able to express feelings, beliefs, and customs on a rug and it is a lifelong learning process.
It can take from two to a number of weeks to make a rug, depending on its complexity and size.

I am very happy to able to belong to GRANATE because our work has had a big impact and we have got great international recognition and respect for our work.
